From Zao’s Fields to the Local Table
Working with Zao Yumezukuri no Kai to Connect Farming, Dining, and Community Life
The flavors of autumn in Zao begin with the people who cultivate the land.
One of GAIA Group’s valued agricultural partners is Zao Yumezukuri no Kai, a local producers’ association. Vegetables supplied through the association are used at both Zao Shokudo and Sakai Coffee Zao Sansuien-mae. These connections allow residents and visitors to encounter local farming not only at a produce shop, but also through a meal.
Recent Kahoku Shimpo coverage of Zao’s late-autumn harvest festival and highland-grown daikon provides an opportunity to introduce this relationship and the people behind it.
A Harvest Festival Celebrating Zao’s Autumn Produce
The 13th Zao Late-Autumn Festival is scheduled for October 31 and November 1, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. The venue is a special event area in the parking lot on the main-building side of Zao Town Hall. A highland daikon sale is among the announced attractions.
According to the Kahoku Shimpo article, approximately 20 local farming businesses were expected to participate. Highland-grown daikon would be offered at around 20–30% below usual prices, alongside pears, apples, and other produce.
The grower interviewed in the article, the representative of Zao Dream Farm, described how the daikon was becoming sweeter as the weather cooled and encouraged visitors to enjoy the freshly harvested crops.
For us, the appeal goes beyond price.
A produce market offers an opportunity to ask where something was grown, how it can be prepared, and what is in season. Conversations with growers can make choosing ingredients an enjoyable part of visiting a farming region.
The reported 20–30% reduction concerns daikon sold at the festival. It is not a general discount on all produce, everyday farm-shop purchases, or restaurant meals.
Zao Yumezukuri no Kai: Connecting Growers and Customers
GAIA Foods works with Zao Yumezukuri no Kai on direct-sales activities that bring local produce to customers. The Zao Yumezukuri produce shop offers seasonal vegetables, fruit, rice, and other goods.
Supporting local food requires both cultivation and reliable opportunities to reach customers.
Direct sales bring produce to household tables. Restaurants prepare it as meals. Travelers encounter flavors associated with the place they are visiting.
We want our partnership to help connect the work of farmers with the everyday lives of residents and guests. Local produce should not be limited to something purchased as a souvenir; it can also become part of regular meals and continuing demand.
Local Vegetables in Our Restaurants
Zao Shokudo: Bringing Farming into Everyday Dining
Opened in September 2026, Zao Shokudo serves lunchtime set meals and evening izakaya-style dining. Its opening announcement identified vegetables from Zao Yumezukuri as part of its commitment to using local ingredients.
Our intention is to make those ingredients accessible through familiar, enjoyable meals.
We hope customers can connect with Zao’s agriculture over an ordinary lunch or family dinner, not only on a special occasion.
Sakai Coffee Zao Sansuien-mae: Local Ingredients and Time to Relax
Sakai Coffee Zao Sansuien-mae also uses vegetables from Zao Yumezukuri no Kai. Alongside a coffee break, dining provides another opportunity to encounter regional ingredients.
The Zao Fureai Marche held on the café terrace has also featured the association’s vegetable sales, creating opportunities both to enjoy a meal and to choose produce directly.
Vegetables and dishes vary with the season, harvest, and supply. This article does not promise that the featured highland daikon will be served in every dish or on every visit.
Putting the Zao Welfare Forest Initiative into Practice Through Food
The Zao Welfare Forest Initiative underpins GAIA Group’s approach to community development. Its aim is a region where people can live with confidence and have meaningful roles, supported by connections among local people, resources, and businesses.
Farmers cultivate crops, produce shops connect them with customers, cooks prepare meals, and guests enjoy the results.
Sustaining these relationships can help purchasing support farmers’ livelihoods while restaurant operations provide places to eat and meet.
We do not want community contribution to be limited to occasional events. Procurement, menus, and everyday business decisions can also reflect a commitment to the region.
Using locally grown vegetables in local restaurants is one practical way to connect social purpose with a business that can continue operating.
A GAIA Resort Stay Can Also Be an Encounter with Local Farming
GAIA Resort draws on the Albergo Diffuso approach, connecting accommodation with shops, dining, and other services throughout the surrounding community.
We encourage guests to experience more than the accommodation alone.
Choose seasonal produce at a local shop, have a meal at Zao Shokudo, and take a break at Sakai Coffee. These simple activities can introduce visitors to the food and people of Zao.
The harvest festival offers one starting point. Everyday visits to local shops and restaurants can help the connection continue beyond the festival itself.
Together with Zao Yumezukuri no Kai and other local partners, we want a memorable meal to become a reason to return.
Carrying the Value of Zao’s Fields into the Next Season
The story of Zao’s highland daikon introduces both a seasonal ingredient and the people who grow it.
GAIA Group will continue valuing its partnership with Zao Yumezukuri no Kai and creating opportunities to enjoy regional produce through restaurants, direct sales, and hospitality.
Our goal is to connect what is grown locally with what is enjoyed locally, helping the value of that food return to its producers.
May enjoying the flavors of Zao also become a way to support its farming and community life.
With appreciation for the region’s growers, we will continue building these connections through food.
