Forbes JAPAN

GAIA Resort

GAIA Resort

How the Choices We Make—Where We Stay and What We Buy—Can Shape the Future of Local Communities

The standards by which people choose products and services are gradually changing.

Price, convenience, quality, and design have traditionally been the main factors influencing purchasing and accommodation decisions. Today, however, more people are also asking:

“How was this product made?”
“What impact does it have on the environment?”
“How does this company contribute to society and the local community?”
“Whose livelihood will my spending support?”

Choosing products and services with consideration for society and the environment is generally known as ethical consumption.

In the field of tourism, travel that protects local nature and culture while contributing to regional economies and residents’ livelihoods is gaining attention as sustainable travel.

Sustainability Is Changing Consumer Behavior

A 2026 sustainable trends article published by Forbes JAPAN highlights a growing willingness among consumers to pay more for products made through sustainable methods.

The trends include increasing demand for:

  • Products made from organic or lower-impact materials
  • Items that can be reused, regenerated, or recycled after use
  • Products combining environmental responsibility with everyday practicality
  • Natural, craft-oriented designs that can be enjoyed for many years

Consumers are no longer choosing only the product itself. They are beginning to consider the entire story—how it was produced, how it will be used, and what will happen when it reaches the end of its original purpose.

This change is now clearly visible in travel and accommodation choices as well.

Sustainable Travel Is Growing Among Japanese Travelers

According to Booking.com’s 2026 research, 71% of Japanese travelers consider more sustainable travel to be important or very important.

Agoda’s 2026 survey also found that 54% of Japanese travelers consider sustainability important when choosing a destination—a significant increase from 39% in the previous year.

The survey further indicated that Japanese travelers place particular importance on contributing to local communities, in addition to protecting the natural environment.

Travelers are increasingly looking beyond famous attractions and luxurious accommodation. They are beginning to seek experiences that allow them to:

“Stay at accommodation that respects local culture.”
“Choose locally produced food and goods.”
“Support local employment and livelihoods.”
“Leave the destination in a better condition than when they arrived.”

Travel is evolving from an act of consuming a destination into an opportunity to build relationships with local communities and participate in creating their future.

Staying Somewhere Can Become an Act of Support

Accommodation has traditionally been evaluated by factors such as room size, facilities, price, views, and service.

These will, of course, remain important.

However, travelers are increasingly finding value in knowing that their stay can:

  • Restore a vacant or unused property
  • Protect local employment
  • Circulate spending among local restaurants and producers
  • Preserve history and culture for future generations
  • Support communities in which everyone—including children, older people, and people with disabilities—can play a meaningful role

An accommodation fee is not merely payment for the use of a room.

It can also help protect regional buildings, sustain local jobs, support food producers, and preserve cultural heritage.

Travelers can enjoy their journey while contributing to the community.
The community, in turn, gains new energy through encounters with visitors.

We believe this mutually beneficial relationship represents the future of tourism.

What GAIA Resort Has Been Working Toward

GAIA Group does not regard sustainability as a temporary environmental trend.

We have been restoring vacant houses and underused properties as accommodation and community facilities, while connecting local nature, history, culture, food, hot springs, and everyday life.

GAIA Resort is not designed as a single large hotel where every experience is contained within one building.

Instead, accommodation is connected with local restaurants, hot springs, shops, farms, historic streets, and the people who live in the community.

By linking these elements, we offer a distributed style of travel based on the idea that the entire community can function as one hotel.

Rather than continually constructing new buildings, we give new roles to properties and resources that already exist.

Rather than keeping guests inside a single facility, we encourage them to walk through the community, visit local businesses, and meet local residents.

By circulating tourism spending within the region, we aim to address multiple social challenges, including vacant properties, employment, migration, welfare, agriculture, and tourism.

This is the form of sustainable travel that GAIA Resort seeks to create.

Sustainability Must Include the Community

The word “sustainability” often brings to mind energy conservation, renewable energy, waste reduction, and the elimination of single-use plastics.

These are all important.

However, we believe a region cannot be truly sustainable if its population continues to decline, vacant properties increase, and local businesses and essential services disappear.

Protecting the environment.
Circulating money within the local economy.
Preserving culture and scenery.
Creating communities where everyone can live with confidence.
Ensuring that every person can play a role, regardless of age or disability.

GAIA Group believes that these goals must be pursued together.

We are not simply an accommodation company.

Nor are we only a real estate company, a food-service company, a medical organization, or a social welfare organization.

We connect these different fields through one shared philosophy. We are a Social Developer that uses the power of business to solve social challenges and guide communities toward a sustainable future.

Participating in the Future of a Community Through Travel

Sustainable travel does not mean sacrificing enjoyment.

It means staying in buildings unique to a region, enjoying local cuisine, bathing in hot springs, discovering history and culture, and connecting with local people.

Each of these experiences can help sustain the future of the community.

In addition to choosing somewhere because it is affordable, convenient, or luxurious, travelers will increasingly value the feeling that:

“By choosing this accommodation, I am supporting the community.”
“Through this journey, I am helping create a positive social cycle.”

That sense of purpose and emotional fulfillment will become an important new form of value in travel.

GAIA Group will continue developing initiatives that combine the joy of travel with solutions to regional and social challenges.

Every night you stay can help shape the future of a community.

Every moment you spend in the region can create new relationships, support employment, and help pass local nature and culture to the next generation.

Through a journey with GAIA Resort, we hope that you will become part of creating a more sustainable future for local communities.
